Ember Guardian
Ember Guardian — hand-carved apple wood sculpture, shaped by fire and intuition
It stands still — but not neutral.
There is something held inside.
“Ember Guardian” is a one-of-a-kind hand-carved sculpture made from solid apple wood, shaped intuitively and transformed by fire. Its vertical form rises with restraint, as if containing energy rather than expressing it outwardly.
I did not design this piece.
It emerged slowly — through resistance, pressure, and listening. I work without sketches, allowing the structure of the wood to guide each decision. The final form is not imposed — it is discovered.
I don’t carve wood. I carve what I feel — and the wood responds.
Only when the form found its balance did I introduce fire.
The surface was charred using a yakisugi-inspired technique — not to decorate, but to reveal. The flame deepened the grain and exposed a structure that remained hidden until that moment. What stayed on the surface are subtle traces of heat — small cracks, tonal shifts, quiet disruptions.
They are not imperfections.
They are part of the story.
The black surface is not painted. It comes entirely from fire. After charring, the sculpture was carefully polished and sealed with natural matte Osmo wax. The finish is smooth, stable, and safe to the touch — it does not stain or release soot.
A vertical opening cuts through the form — allowing light to enter, pass, and settle inside. Depending on the angle, the sculpture reveals or conceals its interior. It never fully explains itself at once.
This is not decoration.
It is a form that holds tension, memory, and silence.
Presence in space
“Ember Guardian” introduces a grounded, architectural presence. Its deep black surface absorbs light rather than reflecting it, creating a quiet visual weight.
As the light changes, the sculpture shifts subtly — not through movement, but through contrast. Shadows become part of the composition, extending the form beyond its physical boundaries.
It works naturally in minimalist, Japandi, and contemporary interiors — especially where space, light, and material are allowed to breathe.
