A moment held in wood
Veil of Air is a hand-carved apple wood sculpture shaped by movement, light, and the quiet dialogue between material and space.
Its flowing silhouette suggests fabric caught by a passing current of air — not frozen, but suspended somewhere between motion and stillness. Smooth outer surfaces fold around textured inner recesses, creating a form that feels unexpectedly light despite the wood’s solidity.
As light moves across the sculpture throughout the day, new contours emerge while others disappear into shadow. What seems delicate from one angle becomes grounded and sculptural from another.
Process & Material
I carved this sculpture from a single piece of apple wood without sketches, drawings, or predetermined plans.
As always, I worked directly with the material, allowing its grain, density, and natural structure to guide each decision. I was not trying to carve a sail or a piece of fabric. I was following a movement.
The form emerged gradually through observation and response. Each curve created a new possibility while removing another. Rather than searching for a final shape, I searched for the next movement.
The smooth exterior surfaces were refined to allow light to travel softly across the wood, while the recessed interior retains a more tactile texture. These carved surfaces reveal traces of the process itself — the marks of shaping, adjustment, and discovery.
A subtle application of white-tinted Osmo wax highlights the texture within the inner surfaces, while a natural matte finish preserves the warmth and character of the apple wood.
Presence in Space
Veil of Air changes continuously with its surroundings.
Morning light reveals the gentle transitions between the curved planes. Strong afternoon sunlight deepens the shadows within the openings, making the sculpture appear lighter and more suspended. In softer evening light, the form becomes quieter and more contemplative.
The openings are as important as the wood itself. Space moves through the sculpture, becoming part of its visual rhythm.
This piece works naturally within interiors that value restraint, texture, and material honesty — spaces shaped by stone, linen, wood, concrete, and natural light.
No single viewpoint tells the whole story.
