Description

Dark Expansion — Abstract Pear Wood Sculpture

Dark Expansion is a one-of-a-kind abstract wood sculpture, hand-carved from solid pear wood and finished with a deep matte black surface.

Its form moves outward rather than upward — two opposing directions held together by a quiet internal tension.

Smooth planes open into deeply carved recesses. Light travels across the outer surfaces, revealing subtle warm brown undertones beneath the black finish, while the deeper areas absorb it almost completely.

There is no single front. As you move around the sculpture, the form seems to open, tighten and expand.

Process & Material

I began Dark Expansion without a sketch or a predetermined form.

I worked directly with a solid piece of pear wood, allowing each cut to suggest the next. The sculpture gradually began to move in two opposing directions, and I followed that movement rather than trying to bring it back toward symmetry.

Pear wood is dense and fine-grained. It allows for smooth, controlled transitions, but it also has its own resistance. While carving, I responded to the direction of the grain, the changing thickness of the form, and the way the material behaved as deeper areas were opened.

Some surfaces were gradually refined until they became smooth and flowing. Others were deliberately left more deeply worked and textural.

The matte black finish does not make these differences disappear. It strengthens them.

Across the smoother areas, light reveals traces of the natural warmth of the pear wood beneath the black wax. Inside the concave recesses, the surface becomes much darker and more absorbent.

Because of this, Dark Expansion changes continuously with light and viewpoint. Its structure is not fully visible from any single position.

Presence in Space

At 41 cm wide and 26 cm high, Dark Expansion has a distinctly horizontal presence.

It does not rise into the room so much as extend through it.

From one side, the form can feel compact and contained; from another, the openings and opposing curves create a stronger sense of movement. Shadows gather inside the carved recesses while the outer planes respond more softly to natural light.

Placed in a quiet interior, on a low pedestal, console or open shelf, the sculpture creates a dark visual anchor without becoming heavy.

It feels particularly at home among restrained materials — stone, wood, linen, concrete — and in contemporary, minimalist, Japandi or gallery-like spaces where light and negative space are allowed to remain part of the composition.

Its presence is quiet, but not passive.

Authenticity

Dark Expansion is a one-of-a-kind original sculpture, hand-carved by me in my studio in Poland from sustainably sourced solid pear wood.

The sculpture is signed and dated by the artist.

Natural variations and subtle imperfections in the wood are preserved as part of the finished work.
