Description
Ivory Flow
Some sculptures are shaped from wood.
Others are shaped equally by light.
Ivory Flow exists somewhere between the two.
Carved from an exceptional piece of European walnut, it rises in a calm vertical rhythm where solid wood and open space exist in quiet balance. Light moves through the openings as naturally as it travels across the surface, becoming part of the sculpture rather than simply illuminating it.
Its presence is gentle, yet unmistakable.
Process & Material
This sculpture began without sketches or predetermined plans.
Like all of my work, it developed through a series of small decisions made directly in the wood. I followed the grain, its resistance and changing density, allowing each movement to suggest the next until the form gradually established its own internal balance.
The walnut carried unusually long, uninterrupted lines of grain. They invited a sculpture that could rise vertically while remaining soft and fluid. Pale sapwood wraps naturally around deeper heartwood, allowing the wood’s own colour transitions to become part of the composition rather than simply its surface.
Nothing happened quickly.
Every opening emerged gradually from solid wood. Every curve required removing material millimetre by millimetre before returning to refine it again, softening each transition until it felt inevitable rather than designed.
I don’t carve wood. I carve what I feel — and the wood responds.
Finished with clear Osmo matte hardwax oil, the surface preserves the warmth and honesty of walnut while allowing its grain and natural colours to respond beautifully to changing light.
The wood is never only a material.
It remains a collaborator throughout the process.
Presence in Space
Ivory Flow does not dominate a room.
It gives it rhythm.
Designed to be experienced from every side, the sculpture gradually changes as you move around it. The relationship between solid wood, open space and flowing lines shifts with every viewpoint, while sunlight settles inside the openings, creating changing layers of brightness and shadow throughout the day.
Standing on a solid black granite base, it feels grounded without becoming heavy. The stone provides quiet stability while allowing the warmth of the walnut and the movement of light to remain the focus.
It does not ask to be noticed.
It rewards those who stay with it a little longer.
