Ivory Flow
Some sculptures are shaped from wood.
Others are shaped equally by light.
Ivory Flow exists somewhere between the two.
Carved from an exceptional piece of European walnut, it rises in a calm vertical rhythm where solid wood and open space exist in quiet balance. Light moves through the openings as naturally as it travels across the surface, becoming part of the sculpture rather than simply illuminating it.
Its presence is gentle, yet unmistakable.
Process & Material
This sculpture began without sketches or predetermined plans.
Like all of my work, it grew through an intuitive conversation with the wood itself. I followed the grain, its resistance, its changing density, allowing each decision to emerge from what the material suggested rather than what I had imagined.
The walnut carried unusually long, uninterrupted lines of grain. They invited a form that could rise vertically while remaining soft and fluid. The sculpture developed slowly, one opening after another, each carved gradually from solid wood and refined repeatedly until the balance between light and material felt complete.
Nothing happened quickly.
Every curve required removing wood millimetre by millimetre, then returning to it again, softening transitions until they felt inevitable rather than designed.
I don’t carve wood.
I carve what I feel — and the wood responds.
Finished with natural Osmo matte wax, the surface preserves the warmth and honesty of walnut. Creamy highlights merge gently into deeper brown tones, while the changing grain becomes an active part of the composition. As daylight shifts, the sculpture quietly changes with it.
The wood is never only a material.
It remains a collaborator throughout the process.
Presence in Space
Ivory Flow does not dominate a room.
It gives it rhythm.
Its vertical form introduces calm structure, while the open passages allow light and shadow to become part of the work itself. Throughout the day, sunlight settles inside the openings, creating changing layers of brightness and shadow that subtly transform the sculpture without ever altering its character.
Placed on the floor, a pedestal, or a low console, it never feels heavy despite its scale. Instead, it creates a quiet point of balance that naturally draws the eye before gently returning it to the surrounding space.
It does not ask to be noticed.
It rewards those who stay with it a little longer.
