Abstract wood sculpture “” — hand-carved applewood form exploring contrast between light and shadow.

“Shadow Split” is a one-of-a-kind hand-carved applewood sculpture built around contrast — smooth, light planes meeting deep, dark hollows that reveal the inner structure of the wood.

I never begin with a sketch. I begin with wood — and I allow it to lead.

This piece emerged through tension between surface and depth. The outer planes remain calm and continuous, while the interior opens into darker, carved spaces that absorb light rather than reflect it. The contrast is not applied — it is revealed.

I don’t carve wood. I carve what I feel — and the wood responds.

The pigmented Osmo wax deepens the natural variation of applewood, moving from warm, light amber tones on the exterior to almost black within the recesses. Nothing is hidden. The material is simply allowed to speak more clearly.

Each side presents a different presence. From one angle, the sculpture feels quiet and balanced. From another, it becomes more intense — the interior drawing the eye inward, creating a sense of depth that goes beyond the physical form.

There is no single front. This is a sculpture that unfolds through movement.

This is not decoration. It is a dialogue between light and shadow, held in material.

Presence in space

“Shadow Split” is compact but visually concentrated.

Placed on a console, shelf, or pedestal, it becomes a clear focal point without overwhelming the space. The black granite base grounds the form and introduces a subtle architectural weight, balancing the organic carving above.

The sculpture interacts strongly with light — especially directional light — which enhances the contrast between smooth surfaces and deep recesses throughout the day.

It works naturally in contemporary, minimalist, and Japandi interiors, particularly in spaces where contrast already exists — between light and dark materials, soft and raw textures, or open and enclosed forms.
