Flame Memory
“Flame Memory” is a one-of-a-kind walnut sculpture, shaped intuitively and transformed by fire — a dark, organic form that carries the quiet memory of heat on its surface.
I carved this sculpture entirely by hand from solid walnut, working without sketches or predefined plans. The form emerged slowly through movement, resistance, changing light, and long hours in the studio. I never try to control the material fully. I respond to it.
I don’t carve wood. I carve what I feel — and the wood responds.
After carving, I exposed the sculpture to fire.
The surface was charred, then carefully brushed, polished, and sealed with natural matte Osmo wax. The result is a deep black finish that remains smooth, tactile, and warm rather than raw or aggressive. Depending on the light, subtle bronze and dark walnut tones appear beneath the charred surface, giving the sculpture a shifting presence throughout the day.
I intentionally left the cracks created by heat visible.
For me, they are not flaws. They are traces of transformation — physical evidence of tension, temperature, pressure, and the moment the material changed under extreme conditions.
A large opening passes through the center of the sculpture, allowing light and the surrounding space to become part of the composition. From some angles, the form feels protective and closed. From others, open and fluid. The silhouette subtly recalls the movement of flame — not literally, but through rhythm, asymmetry, and contained energy.
There is no single front.
The sculpture changes continuously as you move around it. Curves disappear into shadow, openings reveal warm reflections hidden beneath the dark surface, and the form never fully explains itself at once.
This piece was created not as decoration, but as a sculptural presence shaped by intuition, fire, and time.
Presence in space
“Flame Memory” works especially well in interiors built around natural materials, calm architecture, and restrained atmosphere.
The dark, charred surface absorbs light while allowing soft warmth from the walnut beneath to emerge gradually. Placed near natural daylight, the sculpture changes character throughout the day — moving between deep matte black and warm brown reflections hidden inside the form.
It fits naturally into Japandi, wabi sabi, minimalist, and modern organic interiors, especially spaces combining wood, linen, stone, concrete, and quiet neutral tones.
Placed on a console, pedestal, shelf, or sideboard, it introduces calm intensity and sculptural focus without dominating the room.
