Rising Form

Rising Form is a hand-carved applewood sculpture shaped around the idea of emergence.

Its form rises upward in a quiet gesture, somewhere between a flame, a flower, and a living structure reaching toward light. Soft curves unfold from the base and gradually separate into distinct forms, creating a sense of movement without urgency.

As sunlight moves across the surface, shadows become part of the sculpture itself. Openings, recesses, and flowing contours reveal new relationships between light and wood throughout the day.

Process & Material

Like all of my sculptures, Rising Form was created intuitively.

There were no sketches, drawings, or predefined plans. I began with a single piece of applewood and allowed the material to guide the process. Each curve emerged gradually through observation, carving, and response to the wood’s natural structure.

Applewood is a beautiful and unpredictable material. Its subtle colour transitions, changing grain patterns, and occasional knots became part of the final composition rather than something to hide.

The outer surfaces were carefully shaped and refined until they became smooth and silky to the touch. In contrast, selected inner areas retain subtle tool marks and texture, creating a dialogue between refinement and raw material.

Natural matte Osmo wax enhances the colour and depth of the wood while preserving its authentic character.

Presence in Space

Rising Form has a calm vertical presence.

Rather than dominating a room, it introduces a sense of quiet movement and natural rhythm. The sculpture changes noticeably as viewers move around it, revealing different silhouettes, openings, and lines from every angle.

Placed in interiors influenced by Japandi, wabi-sabi, contemporary minimalism, or gallery-inspired design, it creates a subtle focal point where wood, light, and shadow interact throughout the day.

The travertine base adds visual stability while introducing a gentle contrast between organic wood and natural stone.
