Breath of Fire
Breath of Fire is a one-of-a-kind abstract walnut wood sculpture shaped by movement, light, and intuition.
Its spiraling form appears caught in the moment between emergence and disappearance — as if a current of air, a rising flame, or a turning gesture had briefly become visible before returning to stillness.
Carved from a single piece of walnut and mounted on a black beechwood base, the sculpture changes character as it is viewed from different angles. No single side defines it. Every turn reveals another relationship between curve, shadow, and space.
Process & Material
I created Breath of Fire intuitively, without sketches, plans, or predetermined outcomes.
The sculpture developed slowly through direct interaction with the wood itself. I followed the grain, the material’s density, and the subtle suggestions hidden within each newly exposed surface.
I don’t search for form. I search for the next movement.
One curve led naturally to another, while newly opened spaces revealed further possibilities. As light moved across the surface, shadows suggested different directions and invited new decisions.
The walnut itself became an active participant in the process. Its flowing grain moves across the sculpture like traces of energy passing through the material, emphasizing the sense of motion already present in the form.
The surface was carefully refined by hand and finished with natural matte wax, allowing the warmth of the wood and its changing response to light to remain visible.
Presence in Space
Breath of Fire introduces a quiet sense of motion into a room.
Throughout the day, natural light moves across its surfaces, creating shifting transitions between brightness and shadow. At times, the sculpture appears calm and balanced, while at other times it seems to rotate around an invisible axis.
Its presence works particularly well within Japandi, organic modern, gallery-inspired, and contemporary interiors, where natural materials and carefully chosen objects are given space to breathe.
Rather than filling a space, the sculpture changes the atmosphere around it, creating a quiet dialogue between light, shadow, and form.
