Shaped by Silence
Shaped by Silence is a hand-carved apple wood sculpture shaped through rhythm, tension, and attentive observation.
Its form appears both grounded and suspended, as if a sequence of movements has been paused for a moment and preserved in wood.
Light travels differently across every plane. Smooth surfaces catch it softly, while the textured recesses deepen into shadow, creating a quiet dialogue between presence and absence.
This sculpture does not seek attention. It rewards time.
Process & Material
I created this sculpture the way I create all my work — without sketches, plans, or predetermined outcomes.
The process began with a single piece of apple wood and a willingness to follow where the material wanted to go.
Each curve emerged through observation and response. I spent hours turning the wood, studying how the grain moved through it, removing one possibility so another could appear.
I don’t search for form. I search for the next movement.
The deeply textured surfaces were carved by hand, cut after cut, creating a rhythm that remains visible in the finished piece. These areas contrast with the smoother planes that surround them, allowing light to move differently across the sculpture throughout the day.
Apple wood has a quiet strength. It is dense, expressive, and often unpredictable. Its subtle grain and warm character became an essential part of the final form.
The sculpture was finished with pigmented Osmo wax, deepening the natural tones of the wood while preserving a matte, tactile surface that invites closer attention.
Presence in Space
Shaped by Silence changes continuously as the viewer moves around it.
From one angle, it feels architectural and composed. From another, it becomes lighter and more fluid, revealing openings, folds, and shifting relationships between the forms.
Natural light plays an important role in the experience of the piece. Shadows gather within the carved recesses while the smooth edges reflect soft highlights, creating a sense of movement even when the sculpture remains completely still.
Its presence works naturally within contemporary interiors that value material honesty and space — Japandi, wabi-sabi, gallery-inspired interiors, and environments built around wood, stone, linen, and natural light.
Rather than filling a space, it quietly changes the atmosphere of it.
