Description
Confluence
Confluence is a one-of-a-kind hand-carved walnut wood sculpture shaped around the idea of continuous movement.
Rather than leading the eye to a single focal point, it invites it to travel from one curve to the next. Every surface connects naturally to another, creating a quiet rhythm that never quite comes to rest.
Smooth planes, gentle transitions, and the warmth of walnut allow the sculpture to change subtly as light moves across it throughout the day.
Process & Material
I carved Confluence intuitively, without sketches or predetermined plans.
From the beginning, I wasn’t looking for a specific shape. I was looking for continuity — a form that would feel as though one movement naturally gave rise to the next.
Working this way means constantly responding to the wood. Every cut changes what comes after it. Sometimes a curve becomes softer than I expected. Sometimes a stronger line appears because that’s where the grain wants to lead.
Unlike some of my sculptures, I left the entire surface smooth. There are no carved textures here. The walnut itself carries the visual richness through its grain, colour, and quiet shifts in tone.
The sculpture is finished with matte Osmo wax, preserving the natural appearance of the wood while creating a durable, tactile surface that responds beautifully to changing light.
Presence in Space
Although Confluence has a compact size, it creates a surprisingly broad visual presence.
Its horizontal composition encourages movement around the sculpture rather than observation from a single viewpoint. As you walk around it, some forms appear to gather together while others open into space, making the composition feel different from every angle.
Mounted directly on a solid black granite base, the sculpture gains a sense of stability that contrasts with the flowing walnut form above it.
It sits comfortably in interiors that embrace natural materials and quiet architecture — organic modern, Japandi, gallery-inspired spaces, and contemporary homes where wood, stone, linen, and soft natural light define the atmosphere.
