Quiet Span

Quiet Span is a one-of-a-kind hand-carved walnut wood sculpture exploring the quiet balance between solid form and open space. Elevated on a slender stand, its flowing surfaces and carefully carved openings create a calm architectural presence that changes gently with light and every new viewpoint.

Quiet Span

Quiet Span is a hand-carved walnut wood sculpture exploring the quiet balance between two forms connected by space rather than by touch.

Shaped from a single piece of solid walnut, the sculpture is built around the relationship between mass and openness. Rather than separating the form, the carved passages become an essential part of its structure, allowing light and shadow to complete the composition.

Its calm architectural presence is softened by the warmth of natural walnut, revealing subtle changes in tone and depth as the light moves across its flowing surfaces.

Process & Material

I created Quiet Span without sketches or predetermined plans. Like all of my sculptures, it developed through a direct conversation with the wood.

Every cut responded to the grain, the changing density of the walnut, and the way the material suggested its own direction. Instead of forcing a design, I gradually removed what felt unnecessary, allowing the form to emerge step by step.

The flowing surfaces were shaped entirely by hand with handheld carving tools, then carefully sanded to a smooth matte finish. As light moves across the sculpture, the curves reveal changing tones within the walnut, while the openings create shifting patterns of shadow throughout the day.

Natural variations in the grain and the unique character of solid wood have been intentionally preserved, reflecting the authenticity of both the material and the making process.

Presence in Space

Quiet Span introduces presence without overwhelming its surroundings.

Its horizontal composition creates a quiet focal point, while the elevated presentation gives the sculpture a sense of lightness above its base. From different viewpoints, the openings continuously reshape the relationship between solid wood and empty space, inviting the viewer to move around the piece rather than seeing it from a single direction.

Placed within contemporary, Japandi or gallery-inspired interiors, it brings warmth, balance and a calm architectural rhythm to the space.
