Dualis
Dualis is a one-of-a-kind hand-carved walnut wood vase shaped around the quiet dialogue between harmony and imperfection.
Carved from a single piece of European walnut, its flowing exterior conceals a dramatically textured interior where the natural grain, knots, and irregularities remain intentionally visible. The contrast is subtle yet unmistakable, allowing calm and rawness to exist within the same form.
As light moves across the surface, walnut reveals shifting tones—from pale ivory and warm cappuccino hues to deep chocolate browns and dark mineral-like veins—making the vase appear different from every angle.
Process & Material
I carved Dualis without sketches or predetermined plans, allowing the walnut to guide each decision along the way.
While shaping the exterior, I searched for soft, uninterrupted curves that would feel almost effortless. Inside, however, I chose not to erase everything the tree had lived through. The inner cavity still carries traces of knots, changing grain and natural transitions that could never be designed on paper.
Rather than hiding these differences, I allowed them to become part of the composition.
Every surface was carved and refined by hand using handheld carving tools before being carefully sanded and finished with a natural matte Osmo hardwax oil. The finish protects the wood while preserving its authentic texture and allowing the walnut to continue responding beautifully to changing light.
Presence in Space
Dualis occupies a space somewhere between sculpture and functional object.
Whether displayed with delicate branches, fresh flowers in the included glass insert, or standing empty, it creates a quiet focal point rather than demanding attention.
Its sculptural silhouette changes continuously as you walk around it. Light enters the opening, settles inside the darker interior, then returns to the softly curved exterior, creating a gentle rhythm of shadow and reflection.
It feels naturally at home in contemporary, Japandi, wabi-sabi and gallery-inspired interiors where natural materials and silence become part of the atmosphere.
