Poise — Hand-Carved Apple Wood Sculpture
Poise is a one-of-a-kind hand-carved apple wood sculpture exploring the quiet balance between movement and stillness. Created from a single piece of solid wood, it reveals a constantly changing dialogue between light, shadow, texture, and form.
Some sculptures express motion through dramatic gestures. Poise does so through restraint. Its flowing silhouette feels calm and stable while suggesting an energy that never fully comes to rest.
Rather than seeking perfect symmetry, it explores the subtle equilibrium that emerges when contrasting qualities exist together.
Process & Material
Every sculpture begins with the wood itself.
I never prepare sketches or fixed plans before carving. Instead, I spend time observing the grain, the changing proportions, and the possibilities hidden inside a single block of wood. The final form gradually reveals itself through the process rather than following a predetermined design.
Poise was hand-carved from solid apple wood using handheld carving tools. Throughout the process, I responded to the natural character of the material, allowing each decision to grow from what the wood suggested instead of imposing an image upon it.
Its surface reflects this dialogue.
Smooth, flowing planes transition into deeply textured recesses that preserve the physical traces of carving. After shaping the sculpture, I finished the surface using a black matte hardwax oil. Rather than hiding the wood, the finish allows it to remain quietly present beneath the surface.
Natural light continues this process long after the carving is complete.
At first glance, the sculpture appears almost entirely black. As daylight moves across its surface, warm brown tones slowly emerge from beneath the matte finish. Smooth areas softly reflect light while textured recesses absorb it, creating depth that changes throughout the day.
There is no single front or preferred viewpoint. Every step around the sculpture reveals a different balance between mass, openness, light, and shadow.

Poise brings a quiet sense of balance into the room without demanding attention.
Its changing silhouette encourages movement around the sculpture, allowing the surrounding light to become part of the experience. Throughout the day its appearance gently evolves as subtle brown tones emerge from the dark surface and shadows shift across the textured interior.
Placed within minimalist, Japandi, contemporary, or gallery-inspired interiors, Poise creates a calm focal point that rewards slow observation rather than immediate explanation.
