Pivot

Pivot is a one-of-a-kind hand-carved walnut sculpture that can also hold a carefully chosen dry branch. Carved from a single piece of wood, it remains complete as a sculpture while quietly inviting nature to become part of its composition.

Pivot

Pivot is a hand-carved walnut wood sculpture shaped around a quiet point of movement, where solid form opens gently toward space.

Carved from a single piece of walnut, it holds the balance between sculpture and vessel. It can stand complete on its own, or allow a single dry branch to continue the line already begun in the wood.

Its broad flowing planes gather around the carved opening, creating a sense of rotation, pause, and quiet extension.

Process & Material

I did not begin Pivot as a vase in the traditional sense.

The first intention was sculptural: to create a form that could exist independently, while leaving one open place where nature might enter the composition. As I carved deeper into the walnut, the opening gradually became the centre of the whole piece.

I worked without sketches or fixed plans, responding to the density, colour, and grain of the wood. Each curve was shaped by hand with handheld carving tools, then slowly refined through sanding until the surface became smooth and tactile.

Pivot is carved from one solid block of walnut. There are no laminated or joined parts. This gives the sculpture its natural continuity — every pale honey tone, warm cappuccino transition, darker vein, and flowing grain line belongs to the same piece of wood.

The surface is finished with matte hardwax oil. No stains or artificial colouring were used. The colour comes only from the walnut itself, revealed through carving, sanding, light, and wax.

The opening can hold a single dry branch or preserved botanical stem, but it was not created for water or fresh flowers. The botanical element remains optional — a quiet continuation of the movement, not the purpose of the object.

Presence in Space

Pivot has a calm, horizontal presence.

Placed on a shelf, console, or sideboard, it rests close to the surface while still carrying a sense of movement. Light moves across its curved planes slowly, revealing the soft transitions of walnut and the deeper shadows gathered around the central opening.

In a quiet interior, the sculpture does not ask for many objects around it. It works best with space, natural light, stone, linen, wood, or raw architectural surfaces.

Displayed alone, it feels complete and grounded. With one carefully chosen branch, it becomes more open — as if the wood had released a line into the air.

Authenticity

Pivot is a one-of-a-kind hand-carved walnut sculpture.

It was carved from a single solid piece of sustainably sourced walnut, signed by the artist, and photographed in natural light. The images show the real sculpture — no AI renders, no digital staging replacing the object itself.

Natural variations in grain, colour, and small imperfections are intentionally preserved as part of the character of the wood.
