Walnut Wood Sculpture and Sculptural Vase
Continuum is a one-of-a-kind hand-carved walnut wood sculpture whose form is built around a single curved line flowing through the entire piece.
Rising from a triangular base, the sculpture has a slender, slightly inclined silhouette. Its planes shift gently around the central line, allowing light and shadow to reveal a different rhythm from each side.
A discreet opening can hold a dried branch or preserved botanical element. With the removable glass tube inserted, a fresh flower or living branch can become a temporary part of the composition. Continuum, however, remains complete when displayed entirely on its own.
Process & Material
I carved Continuum intuitively from a solid piece of walnut, without sketches, templates or a predetermined design.
The form developed gradually in response to the density of the wood, its grain and the natural direction of the block. I was drawn to a curved line that appeared differently from each side. On two planes, it is carved into the surface. On the third, it becomes the outer edge of the sculpture itself.
Rather than repeating the same view, the line connects all three sides while allowing each one to retain its own character.
Broad planes meet narrow cuts and gently rounded edges. As the sculpture is turned, these transitions move through the light, giving the piece a restrained, almost architectural rhythm.
This piece of walnut contains a greater proportion of heartwood, resulting in a calmer and more even colour than in many of my other walnut works. Its natural grain remains visible without overpowering the clarity of the form.
The entire piece was shaped using handheld power tools and refined through a long process of hand sanding. The matte finish preserves the natural warmth of the walnut and allows the surface to respond subtly to changing light.
Presence in Space
Continuum introduces a quiet vertical movement into the space around it.
The inclined silhouette creates a subtle sense of tension, while the recurring curve holds the form together from every side. Depending on the viewpoint, the sculpture can appear narrow and restrained or more open and expansive.
Displayed empty, it reads as an abstract wooden sculpture. A single branch or flower introduces another line into the composition — temporary, living and constantly changing.
The relationship between solid walnut and a delicate botanical element creates a natural balance between permanence and transience.
In a minimalist, Japandi or wabi-sabi interior, Continuum does not need to dominate its surroundings. It becomes a quiet point of focus, responding to natural light, shadow and the materials around it.
Authenticity
Continuum is a one-of-a-kind sculpture, hand-carved in my studio in Poland.
The piece is signed by the artist and will not be reproduced.
The photographs show the actual sculpture in natural light. They are not AI-generated images or digital renders.
Natural variations in colour, grain and surface have been preserved as part of the character of the walnut.
The wood comes from sustainably sourced material.
