Lumen

Lumen is a one-of-a-kind hand-carved pear wood sculpture where light becomes part of the form itself. Rather than enclosing space, it allows light to pass through, changing its appearance as shadows move across the wood.

Created intuitively from a single piece of pear wood, it may hold a fresh flower in its removable glass tube or gently support a dried branch. In either case, the sculpture leaves space for nature to complete the composition.

Description

Lumen

Some sculptures reveal themselves through their surface.

Lumen reveals itself through light.

Hand-carved from a single piece of pear wood, this sculptural vase was shaped around openness rather than mass. The space at its centre is not a void carved into the wood but an essential part of the composition. Light passes through the form, softening its curves, creating shifting shadows, and quietly changing the sculpture throughout the day.

Its name comes naturally from this relationship. Lumen is not simply illuminated by light—it exists in dialogue with it.

Process & Material

Like every sculpture I create, Lumen began without sketches or predetermined proportions.

Each cut suggested the next, allowing the form to emerge gradually through an intuitive conversation with the wood. Rather than shaping a solid volume, I found myself shaping the relationship between wood and open space. The sculpture reached its balance only when both felt equally present.

Pear wood offered exactly the qualities this idea required. Its warm colour and calm, even grain allow light to become the most expressive element of the piece instead of competing with bold patterns in the timber.

Every surface was carved by hand before being finished with matte Osmo hardwax oil, preserving the natural texture while allowing changing reflections to move gently across the wood.

Presence in Space

Lumen changes with every shift of light.

Morning light softly defines its curves. As the day progresses, shadows travel through the opening, becoming part of the sculpture rather than simply falling across it.

A single flower or branch does not dominate the composition. Instead, the sculpture leaves space for it to continue the movement already suggested by the wood. Together they form a quiet dialogue between nature, light and handcrafted form.

Whether displayed with fresh flowers, a dried branch or entirely on its own, Lumen remains complete while always inviting another presence into the composition.

Authenticity

Lumen is a unique, one-of-a-kind sculpture.

It was hand-carved from solid pear wood without CNC machining, templates or lathe turning. Every photograph shows the actual sculpture available for purchase, photographed in natural light. It is signed and dated by the artist and accompanied by a signed certificate of authenticity.
