Flowing Unity
Flowing Unity is a one-of-a-kind abstract walnut wood sculpture, hand-carved in 2024 from a single piece of solid wood.
Several forms rise from the same material — separating, approaching one another, and opening narrow passages for light.
There is movement in the sculpture, but also a sense of belonging. No element exists entirely on its own. From different viewpoints, individual forms disappear behind one another and return again, changing the balance between mass, space and light.
Process & Material
I created Flowing Unity without a sketch or predetermined design.
The sculpture developed gradually as I removed wood and responded to what appeared beneath each surface. Instead of imposing a finished shape on the block, I followed its grain, resistance, and natural divisions, allowing one decision to lead to another.
What began as a single mass slowly separated into a sequence of rising forms. Some remain close enough to almost touch; others open into deeper spaces where shadow becomes part of the sculpture.
Walnut played an especially important role in this piece.
As I carved deeper into the block, the wood revealed striking transitions between the pale sapwood and the warmer brown heartwood. I chose to preserve and expose these differences rather than disguise them. The dark lines, irregular grain and changing tones visible across the sculpture belong naturally to this particular piece of walnut.
The surface was finished with Osmo natural wax. It protects the wood while retaining its tactile, matte character and allowing the grain to remain clearly visible.
Presence in Space
Flowing Unity changes considerably with viewpoint.
Seen from the front, it appears layered and almost architectural. From the side, much of that complexity contracts into a quieter, slender silhouette. From above and at oblique angles, the spaces between the forms become more visible and the sculpture begins to feel almost continuous.
Natural light makes these changes particularly apparent. Pale outer surfaces catch it softly, while the deeper walnut interiors hold shadow and warmth.
The sculpture does not need to dominate a room. Its presence comes from the relationship between solid wood and the spaces carved away from it — something that continues to reveal itself as the light and the viewer move.
Authenticity
Flowing Unity is an original sculpture created by me in 2024.
It is hand-carved from a single piece of sustainably sourced walnut wood and exists as one unique work. The natural colour variations, grain irregularities and markings of the wood have been intentionally preserved.
The sculpture is signed and dated by the artist.
