Hush — Sculptural Vase in Apple Wood
Hush is a one-of-a-kind sculptural vase hand-carved from aged apple wood — a tall, quiet form shaped by touch, light, and the natural movement of the material.
Its pale surface softens the warmth of the apple wood without hiding it. Grain remains visible beneath the finish, appearing and disappearing as light moves across the sculpture.
There is a sense of stillness in Hush, but not complete silence. The carved openings interrupt the smooth exterior, revealing depth, shadow, and traces of the process inside.
Process & Material
I began Hush without a drawing or a predetermined form.
This is how I usually work. I start with the wood itself and gradually remove material, responding to its grain, resistance, proportions, and the changes that appear with every cut.
The aged apple wood slowly developed into a slender vertical form. I carved into its surface, opening irregular recesses and letting them narrow, widen, and move through the body of the sculpture.
The contrast between the surfaces became important as the work progressed.
The exterior was sanded until it became exceptionally smooth — almost satin-like under the hand. Inside the carved recesses, I intentionally left subtle traces of the tools. They belong to the history of making and give the shadows a different character.
I applied a softly pigmented white wax by hand as the final finish. Rather than concealing the wood, it quietens its natural colour while allowing the grain and variations of the apple wood to remain visible.
Presence in Space
Hush has a restrained presence.
Its narrow silhouette draws the eye upward, while the carved openings hold small areas of shadow within the pale body. In changing natural light, the sculpture shifts gently between smooth planes, darker recesses and the subtle grain beneath the white finish.
It does not need a flower to feel complete.
Left empty, it reads as an abstract wooden sculpture. With a single stem, dried grass or a simple branch placed in the removable glass tube, another relationship begins — between the carved form and something living, temporary and changing.
In a quiet interior, surrounded by natural materials such as stone, linen, wood or concrete, Hush does not ask to dominate the space. It simply holds its place within it.
Authenticity
Hush is a one-of-a-kind original sculpture, hand-carved by me in my small studio in Poland.
It is made from sustainably sourced aged apple wood and signed by the artist.
Natural variations, grain, and imperfections of the wood are preserved as part of the work.
The sculpture shown in the photographs is the exact piece you will receive. It was photographed in natural light — no AI-generated images or rendered interiors are used to represent the work.
