Interstice
Interstice is a one-of-a-kind abstract wood sculpture shaped around the spaces that appear between solid forms.
Deep carved passages, narrow openings, and flowing vertical planes allow light to enter the sculpture rather than simply fall across its surface. From one side it feels dense and architectural; from another, the form opens and becomes almost weightless.
The title refers to the space between things — the small interval where one form ends and another begins. In this sculpture, those spaces are as important as the wood itself.
Process & Material
I created this sculpture intuitively, without a drawing or predetermined design.
The form developed gradually as material was removed. Each cut changed what could happen next. I followed the direction of the grain, the resistance of the wood, and the relationships that appeared between the emerging planes.
Some areas were carved deeply, creating narrow openings through the body of the sculpture. Others were left broader and heavier, giving the work its strong vertical rhythm.
The surface was shaped and refined by hand, then finished with wax to preserve a soft matte appearance and allow the natural variations of the wood to remain visible.
The grain moves continuously through the carved surfaces. In some places it follows the curves closely; elsewhere it crosses them, creating another layer of movement that could never have been designed independently of the material.
Presence in Space
Interstice changes considerably as it is viewed from different directions.
From the front, the sculpture appears almost architectural — a sequence of rising forms connected by openings and narrow passages. From above and from the side, those same elements separate, overlap and reveal unexpected depth.
Natural light moves through the openings and settles inside the carved recesses, creating areas of brightness and shadow that shift throughout the day.
The black granite base introduces a quiet visual weight beneath the organic form. Its simple geometry holds the sculpture without competing with it, allowing the wood to appear almost suspended above the stone.
Rather than occupying space as a solid object alone, Interstice creates its own small architecture of wood, light and emptiness.
Authenticity
Interstice is an original, one-of-a-kind sculpture, carved by hand as a single unrepeated work.
It was created and sold before I began naming every sculpture and issuing certificates of authenticity. I have now preserved the work in my gallery under the title Interstice as part of the record of my earlier sculptural practice.
The photographs show the actual sculpture in natural light. No AI renders or digital visualisations were used.
Natural variations in grain, tone and structure remain part of the finished work.
