Dynamic Contours — Abstract Walnut Sculpture
Dynamic Contours is a one-of-a-kind abstract walnut sculpture, hand-carved as a continuous movement of shifting planes, curves, and sharply changing edges.
Stretching horizontally above a dark base, the sculpture moves between weight and openness. Broad sections narrow, turn and expand again, creating a rhythm that changes with every point of view.
The natural grain of the walnut travels through these transitions like another line within the form. In changing light, some surfaces become quiet and almost flat, while others catch the light along their edges and reveal the depth of the carving.
Process & Material
Dynamic Contours was created in 2025 from solid walnut, without a preliminary drawing, template, or predetermined final form.
I worked intuitively, allowing each cut to suggest the next. Rather than imposing a fixed geometry on the wood, I responded to its proportions, grain, and the way the emerging surfaces began to relate to one another.
The carving gradually developed into a sequence of changing volumes — wide sections interrupted by narrow passages, deep transitions and edges that shift between angular and softly rounded.
This contrast became central to the piece. Walnut carries its own movement through the sculpture: darker grain lines cross the carved planes, disappear around an edge, and emerge again elsewhere. What might otherwise feel fragmented remains visually connected by the material itself.
The entire form was carved and refined with handheld tools, then carefully sanded and finished with a clear matte Osmo wood finish. The finish preserves the natural colour and variation of the walnut while allowing light to move softly across the surface.
Presence in Space
Dynamic Contours is lifted above its black wooden base on two slender steel supports, leaving open space beneath the carved form.
This separation gives the walnut an unexpected sense of suspension. A substantial piece of wood appears almost weightless, held for a moment between movement and stillness.
Its long horizontal silhouette changes considerably as it is viewed from different directions. Curves become edges; recesses open and disappear; sections that appear compact from the front reveal deeper transitions from the side or above.
Light becomes part of that experience. It travels across the grain, catches the raised edges and creates shadows within the narrow spaces between forms. As the light changes during the day, the sculpture reveals a different balance of structure, warmth, and depth.
Authenticity
Dynamic Contours is an original, one-of-a-kind sculpture created and hand-carved by me in my studio in Poland in 2025.
The sculpture was made from responsibly sourced solid walnut and individually finished by hand. Natural variations in colour and grain remain visible as an integral part of the work.
The photographs show the actual sculpture in natural light. They are original photographs of the finished work — no AI-generated renders or digitally created interiors were used.
The artist signed the sculpture.
