Description
Emergence — Sculptural Cherry Wood Vase
Emergence is a one-of-a-kind sculptural cherry wood vase, hand-carved from a single piece of wood into a tall, slender form.
Its shape begins close to the ground — compact, quiet, and unified — then gradually opens upward. Two smooth planes emerge from the broader base, becoming more defined as they rise, while dark recessed surfaces remain between them like traces of the form they have separated from.
The movement is subtle, but continuous.
Light travels easily across the smooth cherry wood, while the deeper carved areas absorb it. From different angles, the surface shifts between warm brown, deep shadow, and almost black.
A flower or branch does not simply sit inside Emergence.
It continues the movement already present in the wood.
Process & Material
I carved Emergence without a drawing or fixed design.
I began with the proportions of the cherry wood itself and worked gradually, removing material, turning the piece, observing what was beginning to appear, and deciding where the form wanted to become lighter, narrower, or more open.
What interested me most was the moment when one compact body begins to divide.
The lower part remained heavier and grounded, while two elongated surfaces slowly developed above it. I refined them by hand until they became smoother and calmer toward the top, but I left the recessed areas between them visibly carved.
Those darker surfaces carry the physical memory of the process.
Their texture catches light differently from the polished outer planes, creating depth without separating the sculpture into distinct parts.
Natural cracks in the old cherry wood were stabilized and filled with a contrasting resin compound. I chose not to disguise them. Their irregular lines remain visible and quietly connect with the darker carved recesses.
The surface was finished with black Osmo hardwax oil. On cherry wood, the finish does not become uniformly black. Instead, it deepens the natural colour into warm browns, charcoal tones, and darker areas while leaving the grain visible.
Presence in Space
Emergence has a quiet vertical presence.
Its narrow proportions draw the eye upward, while the heavier lower section keeps the piece visually grounded. In side light, the smooth planes brighten, and the recessed surfaces become deeper, making the form appear to open and close as the viewer moves around it.
Without a flower, it reads as a small abstract sculpture.
With a single stem, dried flower or branch, the composition changes. The botanical element becomes part of the same upward gesture, extending the form beyond the wood itself.
This relationship works particularly well in calm interiors where natural materials, light and empty space are allowed to remain visible — wabi-sabi, Japandi, organic modern and gallery-like spaces.
Rather than behaving as a decorative object, Emergence creates a small point of stillness and vertical tension within the room.
Authenticity
Emergence is a one-of-a-kind work, carved individually by hand from solid cherry wood.
The natural grain, cracks, and irregularities of the material remain intentionally visible as part of the sculpture.
The vase is signed by the artist and photographed in natural light.
All photographs show the actual existing piece.
No AI renders and no mass production.
