Description
Quiet Turn
Quiet Turn is a one-of-a-kind sculptural walnut wood vase, hand carved into a tall, slender form shaped by a slow, continuous turning movement.
From one side, the sculpture appears almost still — narrow, vertical, and quiet. As it turns, deep diagonal cuts begin to emerge around the body, disappearing and returning rather than forming a regular spiral.
There is a tension in this piece that I particularly like: between something raw and irregular, and a surface that became unexpectedly calm and refined.
Process & Material
I began Quiet Turn intending to make something rougher, more rustic, and closer to wabi-sabi.
The walnut gradually led me somewhere else.
I work without sketches or templates, carving directly into the wood and responding to what appears as material is removed — the grain, resistance, colour changes, small defects, and unexpected structures hidden inside the block.
As I worked, the proportions became more restrained, and the carved cuts grew longer and more controlled. I kept refining the surface until the vase reached a point where it felt quieter than my original idea.
What remained was the contrast.
The body is exceptionally smooth, while the diagonal recesses interrupt it with movement and shadow. Near the centre, an irregular part of the walnut has been filled with black resin. I chose to keep this feature visible rather than disguise it. It belongs to the history of this particular piece of wood and has become part of the final composition.
The walnut was only lightly toned with wax. Its colour therefore remains responsive to natural light, moving between muted brown, soft grey and warmer walnut tones throughout the day.
Presence in Space
Quiet Turn has a narrow vertical presence, but it never feels completely static.
Light travels slowly across the broad, smooth surfaces before disappearing into the carved recesses. From different viewpoints, the darker cuts seem to shift around the body, subtly changing both the silhouette and the balance of the form.
The vase can hold a single fresh flower, branch, or small botanical arrangement using the removable glass tube placed inside.
A single stem emphasizes its height. Wild grasses and dried plants continue the movement already present in the carved walnut.
Without anything added, Quiet Turn remains a sculpture in its own right.
Its restrained proportions and muted materiality feel particularly natural in quiet interiors shaped by wood, stone, linen, plaster or concrete — spaces where light and empty space are allowed to become part of the composition.
Rather than filling a room, the sculpture creates a small point of tension within it: still from one angle, gently turning from another.
