Open Arc
Open Arc is a hand-carved walnut wood sculpture shaped around the relationship between expansion and restraint.
Two rising forms open away from one another, creating a space held not by mass, but by tension. The sculpture reaches outward while remaining grounded, balancing movement and stillness within a single gesture.
Light passes through the openings and across the grain, changing the work continuously throughout the day. From some angles, it feels almost weightless. From others, it becomes more solid, architectural, and anchored in space.
Its presence unfolds gradually.
Rather than demanding attention, Open Arc rewards slow observation, revealing new relationships between form, shadow, and material as the viewer moves around it.
Process & Material
I never begin with a drawing.
Every sculpture starts with a piece of wood and a willingness to listen to what the material wants to become. I work intuitively, responding to the grain, density, tensions, and natural transitions hidden beneath the surface.
Open Arc emerged gradually from a single block of walnut wood, guided by observation rather than a predetermined design.
As material was removed, relationships between the forms began to appear. The openings were not planned from the beginning. They emerged as the sculpture developed, creating passages for light and revealing new perspectives through the wood.
The grain became an active part of the composition. Dark walnut lines travel across the surface, emphasizing movement while reminding the viewer that every curve originated within a living tree.
The sculpture was carved entirely by hand and finished with natural matte Osmo wax, preserving the wood’s warmth and tactile quality while allowing its character to remain visible.
I don’t carve wood. I carve what I feel — and the wood responds.
Presence in Space
Open Arc changes significantly when viewed from different positions.
The openings collect light during the day, while the larger planes cast shifting shadows that alter the perception of the form. What appears open from one side becomes more substantial from another.
There is no single front.
Each angle reveals a different relationship between the sweeping forms, the voids between them, and the natural movement of the walnut grain.
Its warm tones work naturally alongside stone, linen, concrete, glass, and other honest materials. The sculpture feels particularly at home within Japandi interiors, gallery-inspired spaces, organic modern homes, and environments shaped by natural light.
Placed on a console, pedestal, or sideboard, Open Arc creates a quiet focal point that invites reflection rather than immediate attention.
