Aperture — Abstract Walnut Wood Sculpture
Aperture is a one-of-a-kind abstract sculpture hand-carved from European walnut, shaped around a shifting relationship among solid wood, open space, and light.
It began with an opening.
As the form developed, that first space began to influence everything around it. Curves moved towards it, surfaces separated, and new passages gradually opened deeper inside the wood.
There is no single viewpoint from which Aperture fully reveals itself. As the sculpture is turned, openings appear and disappear, broad surfaces become narrow edges, and forms that seemed connected begin to separate.
Light completes these changes. It enters the sculpture rather than simply falling across its surface.
Process & Material
I began Aperture without a sketch or a fixed image of what it should become. One of my first decisions was simply to carve an opening into the solid block of walnut.
From there, I worked intuitively, repeatedly turning the piece in my hands and responding to what appeared. The first opening suggested another curve, then a separation between two surfaces, then another passage through which light could travel further into the form.
Gradually, the solid block became an arrangement of interconnected volumes and empty spaces.
I paid attention to the sculpture from every side as I worked. I did not want to create a front and then resolve everything around it. Each new cut had to make sense from several directions, and often a change made for one viewpoint unexpectedly transformed another.
The walnut itself became part of those decisions. Its character changes considerably across this piece — from quiet, almost even areas to dense, dark and strongly figured grain. Rather than imposing a uniform surface on it, I followed these transitions and allowed the natural structure of the wood to remain visible.
The finished surfaces are smooth and tactile, with the natural colour of European walnut preserved. A matte hardwax oil protects the wood while allowing its grain and tonal variation to remain present.
Under changing light, those differences become even stronger. Warm golden areas emerge beside deeper browns, while the recessed surfaces can almost disappear into shadow.
Presence in Space
Aperture needs some space around it.
Its silhouette changes considerably as you move around the sculpture. An opening visible from one direction may narrow to a line or disappear entirely from another; overlapping forms separate, reconnect and reveal parts of the sculpture that were previously hidden.
For this reason, Aperture is especially suited to a place where it can be seen from more than one side — on a pedestal, console, low cabinet or open shelf rather than surrounded by many other objects.
Natural light brings another dimension to the work.
Light passes through the openings and reaches surfaces deep inside the sculpture, creating small illuminated areas between darker recesses. During the day, these relationships continually shift. Sometimes the outer contours dominate; at other moments, an unexpected fragment inside the form catches the light and briefly comes forward.
The black granite base provides a quiet, geometric counterweight to the movement of the walnut above it. Its dark, solid presence anchors a form that otherwise seems to open, fold and move through space.
Aperture sits naturally within contemporary, organic modern, Japandi and gallery-like interiors, particularly among restrained materials such as stone, linen, plaster, concrete and natural wood. It does not need a dense arrangement around it. Light, space and the possibility of seeing it from different directions are enough.
Authenticity
Aperture is an original, one-of-a-kind sculpture, carved and finished by hand in my studio in Poland.
It was created from a single piece of European walnut and will not be reproduced. The natural variations of grain and colour belong specifically to this piece of wood and are an integral part of the sculpture.
The work is individually signed by me and accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity.
All photographs show the actual sculpture in natural light, including strong late-afternoon sunlight shortly before sunset. No AI-generated images or 3D renders are used to represent the artwork.
