Becoming is a one-of-a-kind abstract sculpture hand-carved from solid walnut wood. Its open, asymmetrical form emerged intuitively through carving — shaped by movement, grain, and the changing relationship between wood, light, and empty space.

Description

Becoming

Becoming is a one-of-a-kind abstract walnut wood sculpture, hand-carved intuitively from a single piece of solid wood.

Its form opens outward — asymmetrical, light yet grounded, held somewhere between movement and stillness.

I wasn’t trying to reproduce an image, and no final shape waited in my mind. The sense of unfolding appeared gradually, as the sculpture itself began to emerge.

Perhaps that is where the title came from.

Not from what the form represents, but from the feeling that it is still becoming.

Process & Material

I began, as I usually do, without a sketch.

I had a piece of walnut and started carving. From there, the work developed through a sequence of small decisions — removing material, changing direction, stepping back, looking again.

Walnut has a strong presence of its own. Its grain changes direction, its density shifts, and every cut reveals something that could not be seen from the surface. I follow these changes rather than trying to force the wood toward a predetermined form.

Over several days of carving, the mass gradually opened up. Deep passages appeared between the rising sections, allowing light to enter the sculpture and become part of its structure.

I kept the surfaces smooth rather than introducing additional texture. In this piece, I wanted the shape and the natural grain of the walnut to remain visible without distraction.

The wood is finished with a natural matte oil-wax finish that preserves its quiet colour and tactile character.

Presence in Space

Becoming changes noticeably with the direction of light.

From one side it can appear compact and grounded. From another, the openings become more pronounced, and the form seems to expand beyond its own boundaries.

Light passes through the carved spaces while shadows settle inside the deeper areas, continuously changing the balance between solid wood and emptiness.

The black flamed-granite base provides a quiet visual weight beneath the walnut. Its mineral surface contrasts with the warmth and movement of the wood without competing with it.

In a calm interior, surrounded by natural materials and space, the sculpture does not need to dominate. Its presence comes from proportion, shadow, and the subtle tension held within its asymmetrical form.

Authenticity

Becoming is an original, one-of-a-kind sculpture, hand-carved by me in my studio in Poland.

It was created from a single piece of solid walnut wood and is signed by the artist.

Natural variations in grain, colour, and small imperfections belong to the material and are intentionally preserved as part of the sculpture.

The photographs show the actual artwork in natural light. No AI-generated images or renders are used to represent the sculpture.
