Continuum — Walnut Wood Sculpture and Sculptural Vase
Continuum is a one-of-a-kind hand-carved walnut wood sculpture shaped around a single curved line that moves through the entire form.
Rising from a triangular base, the sculpture has a slender, slightly inclined silhouette. Its planes shift quietly around the central line, allowing light and shadow to reveal a different rhythm from every side.
The discreet opening can hold a dry branch or preserved botanical element. With the removable glass tube, a fresh flower or living branch may also become a temporary part of the composition. Yet Continuum remains complete when displayed entirely on its own.
Process & Material
I carved Continuum intuitively from a solid piece of walnut, without sketches, templates, or a predetermined design.
The form developed gradually as I responded to the density of the wood, its grain, and the natural direction of the block. I was drawn to a curved line that appeared differently on each side. On two planes, it is carved into the surface. On the third, it becomes the outer edge of the sculpture itself.
Rather than repeating the same view, the line connects the three sides while allowing each of them to retain its own character.
Broad planes meet narrow cuts and softly rounded edges. As the sculpture is turned, these transitions move in and out of the light, giving the piece a restrained, almost architectural rhythm.
The walnut contains a larger proportion of heartwood, resulting in a calmer and more even colour than many of my other walnut works. Its natural grain remains visible, but does not overpower the clarity of the form.
The entire piece was shaped with handheld power tools and refined through a long process of hand-sanding. Its matte finish preserves the natural warmth of the walnut and allows the surface to respond gently to changing light.
Presence in Space
Continuum brings a quiet vertical movement into the space around it.
Its inclined silhouette creates a subtle sense of tension, while the returning curve holds the form together from every angle. Depending on the viewpoint, the sculpture may appear narrow and restrained or more open and expansive.
Displayed empty, it has the presence of an abstract wooden sculpture. A single branch or flower introduces another line into the composition—temporary, living, and always changing.
The relationship between the solid walnut and the delicate botanical element creates a natural balance between permanence and transience.
In a minimal, Japandi or wabi-sabi interior, Continuum does not need to dominate its surroundings. It becomes a quiet point of focus, responding to natural light, shadow, and the materials around it.
Authenticity
Continuum is a one-of-a-kind sculpture, hand-carved in my studio in Poland.
It is signed by the artist and will not be reproduced.
The photographs show the actual sculpture in natural light. They are not AI-generated images or digital renders.
Natural variations in colour, grain and surface are preserved as part of the character of the walnut.
The wood comes from responsibly sourced material.
