Knot

Knot is a one-of-a-kind hand-carved walnut wood vase created from a single piece of solid wood. A single flowing line gently wraps around the form, creating a quiet dialogue between light, shadow, and natural grain. Finished with Osmo whitening wax, its soft matte surface preserves the character of the walnut while giving it a lighter, more restrained tone. The removable glass tube allows the vase to hold fresh flowers, while without it, Knot remains a sculptural object that brings calm presence to contemporary interiors.

Description

Knot

A hand-carved walnut wood vase shaped by a single flowing line

Some forms don’t begin with complexity.

They begin with one quiet gesture.

Knot is a one-of-a-kind hand-carved walnut wood vase created from a single piece of solid wood. Its form appears almost cylindrical at first, yet one gentle movement travels across the surface, dividing and reconnecting the body before disappearing near the rim.

The sculpture doesn’t seek symmetry.

It seeks balance.

Process & Material

Like all of my work, Knot was created without sketches or predetermined drawings.

The shape emerged gradually as I carved, responding to the grain, changing density, and natural character of the walnut. Every cut suggested the next one until the entire form became a continuous conversation between my hands and the wood.

The central flowing line became the defining gesture of the vase.

Rather than adding decoration, I removed material until two organic surfaces appeared to separate and embrace each other before quietly returning into a single volume.

The walnut is finished with Osmo whitening wax, creating a soft matte surface that preserves the natural grain while gently cooling the wood’s colour. Light reveals subtle transitions between pale sapwood and darker heartwood, allowing the surface to change throughout the day without ever becoming visually loud.

Inside, a removable glass tube makes the vase suitable for fresh flowers while keeping the solid wood protected. Without it, the piece naturally becomes a sculptural vessel for dried branches or simply an object appreciated for its own presence.

Presence in Space

Knot doesn’t dominate a room.

It slows it down.

Its restrained silhouette allows surrounding materials to breathe. Linen, stone, concrete, and untreated wood quietly reflect its softened walnut tones, while the carved central line catches changing light and creates gentle shadows that shift as the day passes.

With a single branch, the composition feels intentional.

Without one, the vase remains complete.

Its presence comes from proportion rather than ornament.
