Sentinel is a one-of-a-kind hand-carved beech wood sculpture exploring presence, balance and architectural rhythm. Deep black carved recesses, warm natural wood and a polished granite base create a calm vertical form that changes continuously with light and the viewer’s perspective.

Some sculptures attract attention through movement.

Sentinel does so through stillness.

Hand carved from a single piece of European beech, it stands with a quiet confidence that feels composed rather than imposing. Its vertical silhouette, disciplined rhythm and carefully balanced proportions create a presence that remains calm regardless of where it is viewed.

The sculpture appears almost architectural. Strong planes alternate with deep black recesses, while warm beech emerges between them in soft transitions of light. What first feels structured gradually becomes organic, revealing that the form was discovered rather than designed.

Process & Material

Like all of my sculptures, Sentinel began without sketches or predetermined plans.

I never try to force the wood into an idea. Each cut becomes the starting point for the next, allowing the sculpture to develop through observation rather than prediction.

Although the finished form feels measured and almost mathematical, every proportion emerged intuitively.

The central opening was never planned as a decorative gesture. It appeared when the upright form needed space to breathe. Removing that section allowed light to enter the sculpture while preserving the quiet stability of its silhouette.

One of the defining characteristics of Sentinel is the relationship between wood and darkness.

The polished black granite base continues upward through a sequence of deeply carved black recesses that become part of the sculpture itself. Rather than separating base and sculpture, the black rhythm visually connects them into a single composition.

Selected areas of the beech were carefully charred before being finished with natural black Osmo matte hardwax oil. The dark surfaces absorb light, while the untouched wood reflects warm natural tones. As daylight changes, the contrast between these two finishes shifts continuously, giving the sculpture a different presence throughout the day.

Subtle traces of hand carving remain visible within the recessed surfaces, preserving the physical dialogue between tools, wood and the making process.

Presence in Space

Sentinel doesn’t dominate a room.

Instead, it establishes a quiet point of balance.

Its vertical form draws the eye upward, while the alternating rhythm of solid wood and open space changes with every step around it. No single viewpoint defines the sculpture. Planes become shadows, shadows become light, and the composition slowly unfolds through movement.

Placed within calm interiors of wood, stone, linen or concrete, it introduces structure without heaviness. Rather than decorating a space, it quietly changes the way the space is experienced.
