Silent Ascent
A quiet movement that seems to grow from the wood itself.
Hand-carved from a single piece of European walnut, Silent Ascent is an abstract wooden sculpture shaped around the feeling of gradual upward movement. Its flowing planes rise from a grounded base toward a calm, narrowing peak, creating a form that feels both stable and unexpectedly light.
Nothing here asks for attention.
The sculpture reveals itself slowly, as changing light moves across the walnut, softening one edge while bringing another into focus. Every step around it offers a different balance between solid wood, open space, and shadow.
Process & Material
Like every sculpture I create, Silent Ascent began without sketches or predetermined plans.
Only a single piece of walnut stood before me.
I spent time observing its grain, its changing colours and the subtle shifts hidden beneath the surface before making the first cut. From that moment, every decision grew naturally from the previous one. Each movement permanently changed the possibilities for what could follow.
I don’t search for a finished form.
I search for the next movement.
Some curves emerged because the grain invited them. Others appeared only after removing enough wood to reveal what had been hidden inside. The sculpture slowly found its own rhythm through countless small decisions rather than one fixed idea.
The natural transitions between pale sapwood and rich walnut heartwood became part of the composition itself. As daylight changes, those colours continually shift, allowing the sculpture to feel different throughout the day.
Finished by hand with matte Osmo Hardwax Oil, the surface retains the warmth and tactile character of the wood while quietly reflecting light instead of gloss.
Presence in Space
Silent Ascent changes the atmosphere of a room without dominating it.
Its vertical rhythm naturally draws the eye upward, while the open spaces prevent the form from ever feeling heavy. Morning light emphasises its clean planes; evening light fills its recesses with deeper shadows, revealing another character altogether.
Placed among natural materials such as linen, stone, concrete or solid wood, the sculpture becomes less an object and more a quiet point of balance within the space.
It rewards slow observation.
The longer you look, the more relationships appear between light, shadow and the changing geometry of the form.
