Sway is a one-of-a-kind hand-carved abstract apple wood sculpture that explores how solid wood can quietly shape the space around it. Rather than directing the eye along a single line, the form opens two equally natural paths through its centre, allowing light, shadow and space to become part of the composition.

Carved intuitively from a single piece of apple wood and mounted on a black granite base, Sway changes gently with every viewpoint. Its perfectly smooth surface and flowing grain reveal new relationships between form and space as natural light moves across the sculpture throughout the day.

Sway

Sway is a one-of-a-kind hand-carved abstract apple wood sculpture where solid wood quietly shapes the space around it, allowing the eye to travel in more than one natural direction before returning to balance.

Rather than expressing movement through dramatic lines, this sculpture creates a quieter rhythm. The central form becomes part of the surrounding space, inviting the viewer to explore changing relationships between mass, light and openness from every angle.

Carved from a single piece of apple wood, Sway reveals a different character as daylight changes, allowing the warmth of the wood and the softness of its grain to become part of the viewing experience.

Process & Material

I never begin with sketches or predetermined measurements. Every sculpture develops through an intuitive conversation with the wood itself, allowing its grain, natural structure, and subtle suggestions to guide each decision.

While carving Sway, I gradually realised that the centre of the sculpture was not dividing the composition at all. Instead, it quietly organised the surrounding space. Rather than leading the eye along a single route, the form gently opened two equally natural directions, allowing both movement and stillness to exist together.

Every curve was refined by hand until the sculpture reached the point where removing anything more would no longer reveal the form—it would begin to diminish it. That quiet moment of completion is one of the most important parts of my process.

The sculpture is carved from a single piece of sustainably sourced apple wood and finished with natural Osmo Hardwax Oil. Its perfectly smooth surface responds beautifully to changing daylight, revealing subtle transitions between light, shadow, and the flowing grain of the wood.

Presence in Space

Sway does not dominate a room. Instead, it quietly changes the way the surrounding space is experienced.

Depending on where you stand, the sculpture feels open and weightless or calm and grounded. Light travels gently across its smooth surfaces while the opening at its centre becomes an active part of the composition rather than empty space.

Placed within Japandi, organic modern or gallery-inspired interiors, Sway encourages slow observation. Its presence unfolds gradually, rewarding every new viewpoint with a slightly different relationship between wood, light, and space.
