Unfolding Within

Unfolding Within — a one-of-a-kind abstract sculpture hand-carved from a single solid piece of black locust wood. Created without a predetermined design, the form gradually opened from the original log through a sequence of intuitive decisions, allowing solid wood, negative space, and natural grain to become equal parts of the work.

Description

Unfolding Within

Unfolding Within is a one-of-a-kind abstract wood sculpture, hand-carved from a single solid piece of black locust wood. Its open, shifting form emerged through a gradual process of cutting into the original log and discovering what could exist within it.

I began without a drawing or a finished form in mind. What moved the work forward was curiosity — the need to open the mass, look deeper into the wood, and respond to what each new cut revealed.

As the sculpture developed, solid wood and space began to carry equal weight. Surfaces separated, turned and returned towards one another, while openings appeared between them.

The final form was not designed in advance. It emerged through a sequence of decisions.

Process & Material

I carve directly into a single solid piece of wood, without assembling separate sculptural elements.

With Unfolding Within, I wanted to see how far a dense piece of black locust could be opened while still retaining the physical continuity of the original log.

Each cut changed what was possible next.

Some areas became thinner and more exposed. Others needed to remain heavier to hold the structure together. The form gradually began to unfold through the material rather than being imposed upon it.

Although the sculpture appears to divide into separate planes, everything remains connected within the same piece of wood.

That continuity is important to me.

The sculpture can open without losing the memory of the mass it came from.

I also chose to preserve the natural colour of the black locust. No colouring treatment was used to create the differences in tone. The warmer and darker areas appeared as I carved deeper into the wood.

The grain continues across curves, recesses and narrow transitions, sometimes following the movement of the sculpture and sometimes moving against it.

Presence in Space

Unfolding Within has no single fixed front.

From one position, its planes overlap, and the sculpture feels relatively contained. From another, openings appear between them and the surrounding space begins to enter the form.

Light changes this relationship continuously.

It moves across the exposed grain, catches narrow edges, and disappears into deeper recesses. Throughout the day, parts of the sculpture become visible while others withdraw into shadow.

Seen from different sides, the work does not simply reveal another view of the same object. The balance between wood, opening, movement, and internal space changes with the viewer.

Its presence is quiet, but never static.

Authenticity

Unfolding Within is an original, one-of-a-kind sculpture, hand-carved from one continuous piece of solid black locust wood.

No sculptural elements were assembled to create the form.

The sculpture is signed by the artist and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

The photographs show the actual existing work in natural light. No AI-generated renders are used to represent the sculpture.

Natural variations in colour, grain and structure remain visible as part of the material itself.
